There is a time and place for romantic Valentine’s Day dinners, but when kids are involved, those plans might need to be adjusted. Instead, consider switching things up with fresh and fun family-friendly ideas that everyone can enjoy. After all, a family-oriented Valentine’s celebration can be just as enjoyable—and much more affordable! This month we are thinking about ways to share the love. So here are 3 fun ideas to bring lovable vibes into your household this Valentine’s Day.

Eat red-ish foods

This is super fun to do: First talk about the colours associated with Valentine’s Day (red, pink, purple and white) and then brainstorm fun edible options around the colour. Challenge the family to find both healthy and dessert options and then create a family meal inspired by these colours. For example you may feast on red and pink meats, roasted peppers, sauce or salsa, surrounded by fluffy white rice. This could even be a good opportunity to get them interested in beet root! End off with a fruit salad made of red apples, pomegranate seeds and strawberries with a dollop of raspberry sorbet.

Make heart-shaped pizzas

Make your own heart-shaped pizzas. Begin by making a basic pizza dough, but then instead of rolling it out into a circular shape, pull and pinch on the ends so it comes out in a heart shape. Next, get crafty by cutting out the toppings in heart shapes – a heart-shaped cookie cutter will do the trick. We love this multi-pack from Tescoma on Takealot.

Wear matching PJs

We know that Christmas usually claims this one, but why can’t Valentine’s Day also share some of the love? Valentine’s Day is all about feeling part of a lovable unit. So one way of playing with this idea is to don a set of family PJs. Put them on before busting out a family movie, or cuddle up to read a story together.

The bottom line

Valentine’s Day is typically a romantic celebration, but it can also be used as a way to bring conversations about love and companionship into your home. As well as a fun opportunity to find each other with a bit of family fun after a crazy start to the year.
