Dinosaurs can look enormous.
With their sharp teeth, giant footprints and mighty roars, it’s no surprise that many children are both fascinated by them and just a little nervous at the same time.
Then, on the other side of childhood, we find unicorns, gentle, colourful and magical creatures that make children smile simply by imagining them.
This month’s Bambanani theme brings these two worlds together in a wonderful way because childhood is often a balance between courage and wonder.
As parents, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is not teaching them never to be afraid, but helping them learn that they can feel afraid and still be brave.
Fear is a normal and healthy emotion. It helps children learn about the world around them and teaches them to recognise new experiences. Rather than trying to remove every fear, we can help children build confidence by walking through those fears together.
One of the easiest ways to do this is through imaginative play.
When children pretend to be dinosaur explorers, brave adventurers or magical unicorn keepers, they are safely exploring emotions in a world they can control. They decide what happens next. They become the hero of the story.
Books, pretend play, dressing up and storytelling all help children process fears in a gentle, playful way.
If your child says they’re scared of dinosaurs, rather than saying, “Don’t be silly,” you might ask, “What do you think that dinosaur would like to eat?” or “What if this dinosaur was friendly?” Suddenly the scary dinosaur becomes a character with a personality rather than something frightening.
The same is true for many childhood fears—monsters, the dark, loud noises or unfamiliar situations. Imagination helps children rewrite the story in their minds, giving them a greater sense of control.
Unicorns remind us of something equally important.
Children also need spaces filled with joy, kindness and wonder. They need opportunities to believe in magic, to dream big and to imagine beautiful possibilities. Wonder builds optimism. It reminds children that the world is not only full of things to be cautious about, but also full of exciting adventures waiting to be discovered.
Perhaps that’s why dinosaurs and unicorns make such a wonderful pair.
One teaches courage.
The other reminds us never to lose our sense of wonder.
At Bambanani this month, we hope every roaring adventure, magical treasure hunt, creative challenge and dance party helps children discover something wonderful about themselves.
Because brave children aren’t the ones who never feel scared.
They’re the ones who discover that courage and imagination can walk hand in hand.
